In 2024, September 5 is World Cabernet Sauvignon Day! ๐๐
The variety was born sometime in the 18th century from the crossing of Cabernet Franc ๐ท and Sauvignon Blanc ๐. It spread to the world from Bordeaux, France ๐. It is the basis of one of the best-known blends at home, the Bordeaux blend, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon ๐ท, Cabernet Franc ๐ and Merlot ๐ท.
Worldwide, it is grown on nearly 290,000 hectares ๐ฑ, making it the largest amount of blue grapes ๐.
Its wines are characterized by higher-than-average alcohol, big body and high tannins ๐ท, excellent in acidity and aromatics, if cultivated by careful hands ๐. Its best wines can be aged for more than 10 years โณ.
Its main production areas outside of France are ๐ซ๐ท Chile ๐จ๐ฑ, the United States ๐บ๐ธ, Australia ๐ฆ๐บ, Spain ๐ช๐ธ, China ๐จ๐ณ, Argentina ๐ฆ๐ท, Italy ๐ฎ๐น and South Africa ๐ฟ๐ฆ.
In Hungary, we can find them from Szekszรกrd ๐, Villรกny ๐ท and Eger on the shelves of stores as varieties or hybrids ๐.
Its characteristic scent and taste notes include black cherry ๐, black currant ๐, graphite ๐๏ธ and sweet spices ๐ฟ. Depending on the maturity, it also contains vegetable aromas, e.g. green pepper ๐ซ, mint ๐ฟ.
It is often aged in barrels ๐ข๏ธ, which specifically favors the variety, due to the softening effect of tannins, and barrel spices such as vanilla ๐ฆ, smoke ๐ฅ or coffee โ also appear in it.
It can be perfectly paired with food ๐ฝ๏ธ, be it grilled meats ๐, peppery and spicy sauces ๐ถ๏ธ or dishes with a more intense flavor ๐ฒ.
Its consumption is recommended at 16-18 degrees Celsius, in a large, stemmed wine glass ๐ท.
