Today, August 13, 2024, we celebrate World Prosecco Day! π₯ Its main grape variety is glera. π In terms of the amount of bubbles, "Spumante" is richer in bubbles, "Frizzante" is poorer, and "Tranquillo" is the bubble-free version. π§ Due to market demands, only the bubble version is currently widely known.
We classify Prosecco into several quality categories according to their place of origin in Italy: π The wines of the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) areas come from the 9 provinces of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. ποΈ The DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) top areas come from the province of Treviso, from the mountains between the settlements of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. β°οΈ We meet a similar category in the Asolo region.
In 2010, the producers proposed Prosecco for the protection of origin: the name used to refer to the grape variety as well, but now only the name "Glera" can be used for the grape variety. πΎ In contrast to Champagne, the preparation method here is the "MΓ©thode Charmat", i.e. tank champagne technology, where the second fermentation of the base wine takes place in a tank, and then it is bottled with a pressure-resistant filling system. π However, in premium quality (Valdobbiadene DOCG), secondary fermentation is still permitted in the bottle. π₯
Proseccos are light, low-alcohol, low-bodied and have a good price/value ratio - although a higher-end DOCG can surprise you at a price! π° Green apple, cantaloupe, pear, peach appear in its scent and taste notes. ππππ
They can be found from dry to the sweeter category, connoisseurs and masters of the drink mostly recommend the Extra Dry dryness for consumption, as they think this is how the drink shows its most beautiful face. β¨
