A magyar bor napja

Hungarian Wine Day

June 27, today is Hungarian Wine Day! 🍷

But what is wine? 🤔

"Wine is a drink obtained by alcoholic fermentation from the squeezed sweet juice of the grapes of the wine-growing grape Vitis vinifera." Wikipedia says. However, it is impossible to describe the passion and the mystique that the drink carries in one line. It brings together nations and cultures regardless of religion or worldview. 🌍✨

According to Hungary's climate, it is cool and continental, with 4 distinct seasons. Luckily for us, this climate is perfect for growing many types of grapes. The country is divided into 6 wine regions and 22 (!) wine regions. 🍇🌞❄️

Our total wine grape growing area is more than 55,000 hectares, our total annual production is approx. 3 million hectoliters, so there's plenty to taste! 🥂🍾

There are archeological finds from the 1st century BC, mainly in the Balaton highlands and Szerémség, referring to Hungarian wine. The role of Szerémség was taken over by Tokaj during the Turkish occupation, from where records from 1550 reveal the making of aszú. Since then, Tokaj-Hegyalja has become famous for assur, szamorodni, copy, translation, and late harvest, but the cellars boast even better dry batches. 🍇📜

Perhaps our best-known varieties considered national treasures are Furmint, Hárslevelű, Kékfrankos, Kadarka, Olaszrizling, and even though it is a French variety, Cabernet Franc also found its new climatic homeland in Villány. We can mention excellent domestic breedings such as Cserszegi Fűszeres, Zengő, Zenit, Rózsakő, Vulcanus, Turán. 🌟🍷

Bikavér, which was unfortunately deprecated before the regime change, is now enjoying a renaissance thanks to its beautiful examples from Eger and Szekszárd. 🐂✨

Today, in the heat, we celebrate Hungarian wines and winemakers with a glass of pure, or a nice spritz, also considered Hungarian! 🥂🍇🎉

Write your favorite Hungarian wine in an Instagram comment! 🍷💬
